Harry Potter Playing Cards

It only seems appropriate that the magicians at Theory11 produced a set of playing cards for the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Released in four unique color-ways, these Harry Potter playing card boxes each represented a different house of Hogwarts. These were both a delight and challenge to produce, read more about the process below!

 Harry Potter Tuck Cases

Theory11 teamed up Mattson Creative to design these Harry Potter themed playing cards. The amount of intense detailing in this project made these incredibly fun to produce (oh man, do we have some Harry Potter nerds amongst us), but also challenging, as tiny areas of knocked-out foil isn’t the easiest thing to pull off. We are proud of how these turned out, our expert staff was able to hold on to the smallest details through multiple foil passes and a sculptural emboss.

These require many trips through the press: once for the interior pattern inside (foil) and three times on the outside (two foil colors + the emboss), then a diecut… and then again for fold/glue. That means each tuck case passed through a minimum of 6 presses in our studio and with four different color-ways, meaning four different paper colors and foil combinations; it’s a true testament to the amount of teamwork it takes between our planning team and pressfolks to successfully accomplish these intricate projects.

Paper

This project required multiple types of paper. The blue deck was produced with Mohawk, in Carnival Deep Blue. The green deck was done with Mohawk, in Via Forest Green. The Gold/Brown deck was done with Neenah Classic Crest in Canyon Brown. Lastly, the red tuck was the most unique, using letterpress printing to create a custom color on Neenah Classic Crest.

Methods Used

All of these tucks were foil stamped three times (once on the inside and twice on the outside) and hit with a heavy emboss. They were also diecut and folded/glued before being sent off to meet the playing cards at a fulfillment center.

Design

Mattson Creative designed the graphics for these tucks as well as the cards (not printed by us) for each deck.
