NINETY PLUS COFFEE

Ninety Plus Coffee is a high-end coffee brand located in two estates on the western slopes of the Baru Volcano in Ethiopia where they grow heirloom coffee. We were tasked with designing custom structures to hold these prized jars of beans. There are two different sized presentation boxes that each hold multiple jars, a notebook, and information sheets about each variety in the multipack.

Paper

The Ninety Plus Coffee packaging suite all uses Neenah Folding board in Epic Black. The only variation being what weight of paper is being used (for example, the outer box uses a thicker stock than the inserts do).

Methods Used

The most time-consuming part of this job was the structural design. Our team worked directly with the Ninety Plus team to design multiple structures that uniquely fit their products while also remaining true to their brand’s visual language. Once structural development finished, the print processes included foil stamping, heated-blind stamping, diecutting, and of course, plenty of fold/gluing.

Design

As previously stated, most of the “design” was structural. Ninety Plus Coffee already had a solid brand design that needed minimal adjustment to fit this new suite of packaging.

SMALL MULTI-PACK COFFEE JAR BOX

The smaller multi-pack is the same width and height of the larger one, just a shorter length. It holds mini-jars of their most premium beans and also contains a small notebook. The unboxing experience is similar to the larger box, including an info sheet that lays on top of the little jars, an outer sleeve, and a custom insert to keep the jars snug and safe.

LARGE MULTI-PACK COFFEE JAR BOX

The largest box in this suite holds a small notebook, and five jars of Ninety Plus Coffee’s high-end coffee beans. On top of the five jars of coffee is a large flat printed piece (see photo above) that goes into detail on each type of coffee included in the box. The outer sleeve allows for a unique unboxing experience for the consumer. On top of that, the presentation of the jars is elevated by the insert being only half the diameter of the jar, so it sticks out while still being securely held.

INDIVIDUAL COFFEE JAR BOX

The single-jar box holds one of the larger jars of beans (the same size jars as what comes in the large multi-box). It has an information sheet as well, but this one has a small lip on either end so that it tucks above and below the jar, being securely held in place when the box is closed. The box itself is open facing, so when you slide the outer sleeve off, much like the other boxes, you see the information sheet and then the entire front of the jar. The intentional presentation design in all these boxes are similar, and speak to the brand’s quality.
